6/25/2023 0 Comments Penelope by Anya WyldeThe laughs, fun, and randomness made this very playful book filled with boisterous merriment (yeah, I totally wrote that) that is endearing and addictive. Not only did this book give me those things, but it also gave me some truly random but also charming characters and moments. Penelope was a book I started to read in hopes of funny moments and just all-out good fun. What follows is a series of misadventures, love affairs, moonlit balls, fancy clothes, fake moustaches, highwaymen, sneering beauties, pickpockets, and the wrath of a devilishly handsome duke. Unfortunately, her rustic finesse turns out to be as delicate as a fat bear trying to rip apart a honeycomb infested with buzzing bees. Thus begins our heroine’s tale as she attempts to tackle the London season with all her rustic finesse. The dowager, no less, has invited her for a season in London, where she will attempt to catch a husband. Synopsis: Leaving behind the rural charms of Finnshire, Miss Penelope Fairweather arrives in London with hope in her heart and a dream in her eye. Paris moves back and forth in time between several major periods and weaves together the lives of various family lines from generation to generation. Rather they are histories with a spoonful of sugar provided by the narrative. Paris takes the same form as his previous novels: a sweeping overview of the history of a particular place, sometimes over thousands of years, as seen through the lives of a group of families, whose members are conveniently present at moments of great change, import, or historical interest.Īlthough meticulously researched, these books aren’t really stories. The fans of course will buy whatever he writes, and those who haven’t read his work may be enticed by the subject itself. Paris, his eighth effort, will most likely only increase his audience. Each of these has been a major bestseller, all of them are huge, and have gathered an enormous fan base for Rutherford. He began his career with Sarum, about England, and since then has tackled Russia, London, and Dublin ( Russka, London, The Princes of Ireland, The Rebels of Ireland). After four years since his last effort, New York, Edward Rutherfurd is back with his latest historical doorstop. 6/24/2023 0 Comments Founding mothers by cokie robertsOf course, the strange part is that they didn't have big budgets. So just as women were starting to assert themselves in the workplace more than they had before as a group we had this rise of public broadcasting, public television and public radio. So that started happening in the early '70s in tandem with the second wave women's movement. And people were worried people in power and people swirling around the power were concerned about the power that regular broadcasting commercial broadcasting had on the American populace.Īnd so that's why President Johnson signed into legislation a bill that funded public broadcasting and that only peripherally included radio, because at that point radio was sort of a left for dead medium that had been big footed by TV.Īnd so, in the in the early '70s, when public television and public radio were ramping up, moving over from educational stations, educational media was very, very strong, but it wasn't codified as under one umbrella. Heidi Holtan: When did National Public Radio begin? What was the world of journalism like for women at that time?įor anybody listening who remembers the '60s television had basically asserted its grip on the American psyche by the '60s. KAXE Morning Show conversation with Lisa Napoli Listen to Napoli’s interview here or read the transcript of my Q-and-A with the author below. According to Napoli, there's a possibility of this book becoming a TV series or movie, thanks to Josh Stamberg, Susan Stamberg's actor son. We will never know why we are here, or if there is reason, so should stop looking now, and end it all. Anyway, I take this from it:Ĭamus is acknowledging that logically, in a universe that man can never know the point of, suicide is the sensible option. It does become more easy to follow as it progresses, perhaps as the reader becomes used to the style. It`s not a weighty tome, it`s a small paperback, a collection of various essays and short stories, and this version is smaller than A5. If you are not totally familiar with either the ideologies or the language of philosophy, then this will be a hard read. To say Camus dresses this work in a cloak of impregnability, though being a little harsh, is true enough. I used to think I was an existentialist, but always felt it a little too earnest, or humourless, and leant too near Nihilism. Firstly, I think the central reasoning behind Absurdism is absolutely fantastic. |
